This IDC study examines SMB use of and future acquisition plans for personal computers and different advanced productivity products: Chromebooks, tablets, smartphones, phablets, and workstations. Small businesses are examined in detail by size (<5, 5-9, 10-19, 20-49, and 50-99 employees) and compared with midsize businesses (firms with 100-999 employees). The continuing importance of PCs as an IT spending priority is examined first along with the relative share of IT hardware spending associated with different personal productivity products. Ownership of different products is compared by company size and industry, and the share of total PCs represented by notebook models is examined. Future acquisition plans are then examined in similar detail. The study concludes with essential guidance.

"The variety of different personal productivity products used by U.S. SMBs ranges from desktop PCs and notebook PCs to the latest smartphones, tablets, and workstations," noted Ray Boggs, vice president of SMB research at IDC. "While the average number of devices and form factors continues to grow, the need for consolidation will be increasingly apparent in the coming years." IDC expects changing performance needs and the availability of vertically specific applications to be key factors driving SMB purchase decisions even as firms look to rationalize device deployment.
