This IDC study examines wearable devices (commonly referred to as wearables), including which health and nonhealth features and functionalities our survey respondents were interested in the United States. Data was collected from December 16 to December 30, 2014, from 252 wearable device owners.
"The wearables market is in its initial stages in the United States, and the results in this survey indicate that there is interest in multiple features and functionalities," says Ramon T. Llamas, research manager for IDC's Wearables team. "Health and fitness are the low-hanging fruit, so it does not surprise that the most popular features were tracking descriptive data (steps taken, calories burned, and hours slept). Similarly, among nonhealth features, smartphone notifications earned the highest interest outside of smart eyewear. These are currently offered today on most wearable devices. What will bear close observation is how tomorrow's wearables will bring added functionality beyond what we know today, how vendors will evangelize those experiences, and how receptive audiences will be to them."
