This IDC study explores the nature of business innovation and the role of technology and the IT organization in supporting innovation. It defines a spectrum of innovation as having five distinct styles, each with its own characteristic attributes of scope, risk, value, and IT contribution.

It explores the idea of a process of innovation in terms of what innovation really means within the enterprise and how it actually gets done. This study focuses on a few key IT management areas that are central to supporting enterprise innovation:

  • What are the five styles of business innovation?
  • How is business innovation enabled by IT?
  • How can the IT organization contribute to each style of innovation?
  • How does business type and industry affect the role of IT?
  • How can IT be a true partner in the governance of the innovation process to ensure that IT resources are consulted and used in promoting new ideas?
  • For the CIO, what are the potential pitfalls and obstacles in becoming a recognized innovation leader?

"CIOs who hope to be successful partners in business innovation will need to control the dialog within their enterprise in terms of IT's potential for driving new ideas, innovative products, and services and connecting with next-generation markets with emerging technology," says Fred Magee, adjunct research advisor, IDC's Research Network. "To achieve that goal, it will be necessary to realize that innovation is not a one-size-fits-all phenomenon. Businesses innovate differently and for different purposes and outcomes."
