This IDC study uses recent survey results from the United States to assess which types of console gaming peripherals are the most popular in 2014, how console gaming peripherals are used, and how often new aftermarket peripherals are purchased. This study also considers how hardcore gamers - a minority of console gamers who typically play >15 hours per week and who have certain genre preferences - differ from other types of console gamers (from a peripheral purchasing and usage standpoint).

"Standard gamepad controllers and VoIP headsets remain the most popular aftermarket console gaming peripherals in 2014," says Lewis Ward, IDC's director of Gaming Research. "However, it's also clear that hardcore gamers have certain tastes and preferences that set them apart from the typical console gamer, and peripheral manufacturers should bear these differences in mind when bringing new devices to market."
