This IDC study presents the results of IDC's 2014 IT Strategy and Innovation MaturityScape Benchmark Survey. This study should be viewed as a companion to IDC MaturityScape: IT Strategy and Innovation. Together, the two studies present IDC's strategy and innovation maturity model:

  • In this study, we present the results from quantitative research that will enable organizations to assess their strategic maturity level against industry benchmarks.
  • In IDC MaturityScape: IT Strategy and Innovation , we described IDC's IT Strategy and Innovation MaturityScape framework, which identifies the stages, dimensions, outcomes, and actions required for companies to effectively foster the strategic maturity needed to success in the new environment of the 3rd Platform.

This pair of studies provides an opportunity for enterprise-class organizations to benchmark themselves against other similarly sized organizations in terms of their strategy and innovation maturity, to uncover maturity gaps among different dimensions, and to plan for improvement. These studies enable CIOs, IT executives, and other senior leaders to optimize decision making from both a business and a technical perspective.

"IDC believes that business leaders are struggling to adapt their strategies at the speed of change that the 3rd Platform is imposing on them. In addition, because so much of the 3rd Platform relies on adopting emerging technologies effectively, there is an added emphasis on the CIO's ability to deliver innovative IT solutions that support and, in some cases, anticipate enterprise strategic goals," says Fred Magee, adjunct analyst with IDC's Research Network. "To assist business and IT leaders in the area of developing innovative and strategic 3rd Platform capabilities, IDC created its IT Strategy and Innovation MaturityScape. It is designed to identify IT maturity (in support of strategy and innovation) as a series of measurements in key areas like leadership, change management, and financial management."
