This IDC study highlights key trade-offs that IT decision makers face with cloud-based application services. IDC data has shown that enterprises are expanding their use of application development (AD) services as well as the use of platform-as-a-service (PaaS) (or cloud) technologies, largely in response to corporate imperatives. But while the strategic use of cloud-based AD services has merits and helps organizations achieve their business objectives, it also introduces risks. This study outlines key benefits and drawbacks that IT decision makers should keep in mind with cloud-based AD services as well as offers guidelines to consider before moving forward with the strategy.
"Adoption of cloud-based application development (e.g., PaaS) tools has enabled organizations to streamline application development activities and generate business value. The adoption has forced traditional application development service providers to beef up their capabilities to meet growing demands, and the attractiveness of using cloud-based application development services is permeating throughout the custom application development services market," explains Pete Marston, research manager at IDC. "But while adopting cloud-based application services may seem like a no-brainer for many organizations, organizations must think through the adoption process very carefully to ensure they can achieve measurable and realistic business results as well as steer clear of common pitfalls that could undermine corporate imperatives."
