This IDC study examines the current use of and future acquisition plans for different storage technology by U.S. small and midsize businesses. This document, which is based on IDC's 2014 U.S. SMB Survey of 744 SMBs, also examines the extent to which SMBs in different size and industry categories consider storage a key IT spending priority. It compares the relative spending on different storage technology categories and notes current and planned use of different disk storage technology (disks embedded within servers, direct-attached storage, network-attached storage, and storage area networks). The study also notes the changing use of cloud-based storage and presents details on different cloud storage types, with both current use and future acquisition plans described.
"As SMBs take steps to enhance their IT infrastructure, the availability of advanced storage resources has been an important part of their thinking," said Ray Boggs, VP for IDC's Small and Medium Business Research. "Cloud storage in particular has been a growing part of portfolio of storage technology that SMBs have been using and plan to expand in the future." Boggs noted that even the smallest firms understand the importance of effective storage solutions to support the latest applications and productivity initiatives.
