This IDC study provides insight on the shipment of server and storage infrastructure by original design manufacturers (ODMs) directly to the largest cloud service providers and Internet companies, commonly referred to as hyperscale datacenter operators, a subset of the service provider mega-datacenter space.
According to Matt Eastwood, IDC group vice president, and Laura DuBois, IDC research vice president, "IDC expects that ODMs will continue to expand their sights on additional cloud service providers and SaaS providers with commercialized versus custom-built offerings. Server and storage OEMs that have decided on an "arms merchant" strategy to sell to these cloud customers will need to rethink their traditional product lines, business models, and operating margin expectations."
