This IDC study analyzes the progress that operators across Western Europe have made in the migration toward next-generation access (NGA) technologies. It provides IDC's view on the future development of technologies, services, and players in this space. IDC's definition of NGA includes three different forms: very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL), Data Over Cable Service Interface (DOCSIS) 3.0 cable services, and fiber to the premises (FTTP). This study also includes quantitative insights into the development of average bandwidth, coverage, connections, and spending for each of the next-generation access technologies.
"As next-generation access networks become increasingly hybrid, the challenge for service providers is to create a consistent portfolio of services that are agnostic of the underlying network," said Jan Hein Bakkers, senior research manager, IDC European Telecommunications and Networking.
