This IDC study analyzes Western European vertical market indicators and aims to understand the structure, size, and economic importance on the country level of all major Western European industry sectors. Focus is on GDP contribution of vertical markets to total GDP on the country level and employment numbers by vertical market in the 16 Western European countries in 2013. To assess IT sophistication, IT-over-GDP and IT-per-employee ratios are also given for each vertical market in the 16 Western European countries. Vertical markets covered include agriculture, construction, mining; discrete manufacturing; process manufacturing; transport; communications; utilities; retail/wholesale; finance; government (central and local government); healthcare; education; business services; and other services.
"The Western European economic region is characterized by large diversities and fragmentation. Understanding these differences is essential to build an effective IT planning strategy by vertical market," said Nina Bonagura, senior research analyst, IDC European Vertical Markets.
