This IDC study analyzes the installed base of smartphone users in the United States by operating system (OS). It combines IDC's extensive knowledge of smartphones, smartphone users, subscribers, subscriber growth, and challenges and opportunities for different operating systems. Findings in this document are based on information gathered from primary and secondary sources during the past six months.Mobile network operators continue to see substantial smartphone growth and sales as subscribers continue to transition from feature phones and current smartphone subscribers upgrade to newer devices, via either early upgrade plans or the traditional two-year route. IDC estimates smartphone penetration to reach 85.8% of the overall U.S. subscriber base by the end of 2015, reflective of the increasing value of smartphones relative to feature phones in a market where it is becoming easier for subscribers to get their hands on a smartphone device. While at one time smartphones required a sizable down payment, there are now a number of relatively inexpensive devices available from a number of different manufacturers for all operating systems.

"Smartphones continue to penetrate the market, with approximately 85.8% of the U.S. subscriber base with a device at the end of 2015," says Brian Haven, senior research analyst with IDC's U.S. Mobile Consumer Services team. "The challenge for mobile network operators is converting the rest of the addressable market on to smartphone devices and moving older 3G smartphone subscribers to LTE devices. This transition will not only drive sales but also positively impact data revenue from LTE traffic."
