"The consumer fixed broadband services market is mature and is nearing saturation with more than four out of every five U.S. households expected to have a fixed broadband connection by 2018. Consumer demand for fixed broadband access continues to slow, but IDC anticipates that more than 15 million new consumer fixed broadband subscriptions will be added over the next five years. Although 3G/4G mobile broadband services are rapidly gaining traction with consumers, they are not likely to displace fixed broadband services until the latter years of the forecast period. Even then, many consumers will continue to perceive fixed broadband as indispensable in the home because of its much faster downstream and upstream data rates and the ability to bundle fixed broadband with voice, video, and entertainment and home automation services." - Amy Lind, research manager, Consumer Multiplay and Broadband Services
