This IDC study of the Canadian infrastructure outsourcing market presents IDC's market sizing and spending forecast. The grave has been dug for some time now. The IT outsourcing market, which quietly marked its 25th anniversary in 2014, has seen deal sizes cut in half and margins tightened. Competition used to be something that occurs only during times of renegotiation but has become a constant battle for market share. For most of the past 25 years, outsourcing has meant IT vendors providing hosting and application services to their clients with more or less the same staff and facilities that they had before. This asset-based outsourcing model has withstood three recessions, the emergence of offshore players, and downsizing and rightsizing of the IT department.
"While the traditional model continues to dominate the Canadian landscape, we project that this form of outsourcing will peak in 2015 and decline after that," says Mark Schrutt, research vice president, Services and Enterprise Applications.
