This IDC study examines the growing importance of social and environmental responsibility in outsourcing contracts. In increasing frequency, buyers are placing greater emphasis on the benefits sustainability measures provide in outsourcing, such as efficiency, lower cost, and the support of their own organizational objectives. IDC field research suggests that sustainability is a growing, almost standard, requirement in most outsourcing contracts. Sustainability emphasis in outsourcing contracts varies depending on the buyer and the buyer's industry, but it is never absent. "The vendor community has also taken notice. A few leading outsource providers are establishing strategic sustainability capabilities," says Mark Schrutt, director of IT Services and Enterprise Applications for IDC Canada. "On the other hand, a number of providers have chosen to follow the leaders and have minimal or superficial sustainability capabilities."
