This IDC study provides both a bottom-up and a top-down revenue sizing for basic and advanced storage services, which are offered in a cloud delivery model. "Cloud storage service providers are developing more sophisticated, long-term information management solutions that go beyond simple storage capacity in the cloud," says Brad Nisbet, program director, Storage Services at IDC. "We see backup as a core foundation upon which additional services will expand, such as file sharing and long-term information management." Public cloud storage services continue to show robust growth. According to Laura DuBois, program VP, Storage Software at IDC, "While the backup segment consumes a very large portion of the overall market today, it is some of the other smaller segments that show the greatest market potential. More and more firms do not just want backup to the cloud but also want to be able to recover in the cloud. This changes the game from purely a data copy function to a systems-level infrastructure, configuration management and operation discussion, while providing orders-of-magnitude improvements in recovery time objectives."
