This IDC study (a translation of Japanese document IDC #J11420109) analyzes the shipments in the Japan fiber channel (FC) market, a major component of storage networking infrastructure, for 2006-2010; in addition to forecasts up to 2015. Previous shipments of FC switches are based on unit shipments, port shipments, and value of shipments while the forecast is based on port shipments and value of shipments. Furthermore, 2006-2010 sales for the Japan external disk storage system by specific protocol (DAS, mainframe networked, NAS, FC-SAN, iSCSI, FCoE, SAS-SAN, InfiniBand) are provided together with a forecast up to 2015, and an analysis is made on the effect of diversification of protocols on the Japan storage networking infrastructure environment. "The diversification of protocols in storage networking infrastructure is giving rise to new business opportunities as well as new rivalries. The importance of product and sales strategies adapted to such diversification is becoming increasingly important to storage vendors," says Masaaki Moriyama, group director, Storage/Server/Printer, IDC Japan.
