This IDC study (a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J11260107) surveys and analyzes the business trends of 10 middle-ranking vendors in the Japan IT services market in 2011. According to IDC definitions, middle-ranking vendors refer to vendors with revenue share that follows that of the 12 leading vendors, which estimated Japan IT services revenue exceeded 100 billion yen. Vendors ranking 13-17 in the Japan IT services revenue are covered in this study and the analysis is based on consolidated Japan IT services revenue by service segment (estimated by IDC definition). Apart from these vendors, a few other middle-ranking vendors are extracted based on their characteristics, and their business trends are also analyzed. Many middle-ranking vendors in the Japan IT services market achieved positive growth in their IT services revenue for the period ending March 2011, and the performance recovery trend is relatively strong compared with leading vendors. However, it is still early to say that the market had entered a full-scale performance recovery period because the performance is also supported by special demands such as integration projects among major customer base. Middle-ranking vendors capture IT spending from their major customer base through business process outsourcing (BPO) deployment and supporting overseas deployment while exploring new earning opportunities such as asset-based business. "With their limited business resources, middle-ranking vendors must protect their earnings from existing customers and plan to secure new customers and deploy services in new domains. To that end, utilizing the limited resources more effectively through efforts such as improving marketing capabilities and strengthening alliances with overseas vendors is important," says Takuya Uemura, IT services research analyst, IDC Japan.
