This IDC study, which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J11030104, analyzes the current status and characteristics of Internet datacenters provided by carriers and datacenter providers in Japan. It also presents future trends, based on interviews with 13 leading providers and information gathered from user surveys. In addition to the market analysis by major service categories, the study forecasts the Internet datacenter market size from 2010 to 2015. Due to the economic recovery in 2010, the demand is gradually returning. While the collocation segment has yet to fully recover, the hosting segment is making a good recovery. In particular, shared hosting and cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) gained penetration and are growing steadily. Negative effects of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake have been small. On the other hand, interest in cloud IaaS and demand for datacenters as business continuity planning (BCP)/disaster recovery (DR) solutions outside of Tokyo are increasing. "Datacenter providers should focus on providing cloud services targeted on segments that would leverage their strengths, expand datacenters including ecosystems, and enhance service lineups centered on system life cycles," says Akiko Kawakami, senior market analyst, Communications, IDC Japan.
