The immediate context for this analysis comes from the launch of the Windows Phone 7.5 platform in India in October, followed by Nokia's launch of its first Windows-based smartphone, Lumia, and a whole new Asha series of India-focused "smarter" feature phones that are expected to be attractively priced. Key findings of this study include the following: - For both Nokia and Microsoft, that India is "one of the most important" markets from a mobile device segment perspective is a given. The question is how important it is from a prioritization standpoint.
- For Nokia, India continues to be a stronghold, compared with many other major markets globally, for the Finnish handset maker. Also, it's been argued, and with good reasons that the India market could actually serve as a lever that could help Nokia win back some of its lost market shares, globally.
- For Microsoft, since the relevance mostly lies in the smartphone segment, advanced markets like the Unites States or Western Europe would look more attractive where smartphones have already overtaken feature phones in terms of units being shipped. However, while India may have less immediate attractiveness, given the somewhat small percentage of the market constituted by the smartphones, the long-term story can't be lost. Moreover, given the size of the market, with 42.8 million units shipped during 2Q11 alone, even a small smartphone percentage translates into a sizable opportunity. The smartphone segment, at 5.6% of the India mobile phone market in 2Q11, had shipments of 2.1 million units during the quarter. For the full 2011, the category is forecast to reach 10.73 million units.
- Further, the smartphone market in India is still dominated in a big way by Nokia's Symbian platform, which held close to 45% of the market in terms of units shipped during 2Q11. That presents a big opportunity for both Nokia and Microsoft to leverage, as Nokia smartphones being migrating from the Symbian platform to Windows starting year-end 2011. This migration is an obvious challenge too for the duo, given the rapid growth of the Android platform in the India smartphone market in recent quarters.
