This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for Western European media tablet and smartphone shipments. "The Western European mobile devices market has been experiencing great growth as converged devices top consumers preferences. Smartphones reached a new record in 2010, with shipments totaling over 71.5 million units. The segment will continue to grow at a CAGR of 21% from 2010 to 2015 in Western Europe to represent 81% of total shipments by 2015," said Francisco Jeronimo, research manager, IDC European Mobile Devices. In 2010, Apple changed the until-then niche tablet industry, creating a new category of consumer devices with the launch of its iPad, a successfully proven product. "Media tablets were the hottest products to shake the PC industry in 2010, and the market reached a volume of over 5.5 million units in the region. IDC estimates the media tablet market across Western Europe to continue to enjoy robust expansion, with shipments forecast to reach over 44 million units, more than eight times more than in 2010," said Eszter Morvay, research manager, PC and Media Tablets, IDC Europe.
