This IDC study was designed to examine the awareness and significance of security attributed to hardcopy devices. Not long ago, a firestorm brewed in the hardcopy industry after a CBS News report highlighted the possibility of personal information being access or hacked via common hardcopy devices. Many users had no awareness that their copies and prints could be hacked if these jobs remained resident on the device's hard drive. As a result, manufacturers of these machines needed to quickly address the growing concerns of a user audience that worried about unauthorized information or documents falling into the wrong hands. "Not many customers think about the printer or the MFP as a possible vulnerable point in a company's document security processes. On the contrary, all devices on the network, including printers and MFPs, need to be secure, corporate assets. Additionally, many hardcopy devices are equipped with hard drives that could represent another point of vulnerability, which must be addressed in the organization's security strategy. The tools to achieve the highest level of document security are available, and we believe it is imperative for hardcopy market participants to educate their customers on the important benefits provided by these security solutions," says Keith Kmetz, program vice president for IDC's Hardcopy Solutions research programs.
