IDC performs separate detailed surveys and totals for server unit shipments by various attributes, such as vendor, model, price band, type of CPU, and OS. An analysis of commercial distribution channels in the Japan x86 server market reveals major differences between vendors' business models. Furthermore, in the open-channel market, the various channels are leveraging their unique characteristics to gain an advantage over direct sales by server vendors. "Increasing understanding of the open-channel market will be an important part of market strategy.
