This IDC study examines the extent to which small and medium-sized businesses worldwide indicate that environmental concerns have played or will play a role in their technology acquisition decisions. With PCs as the representative product examined, the share of companies by size citing green attributes as influential is compared by country and size category. Developed and developing countries are compared and the relative change between past purchase influence and future purchase activity is also examined. In addition, the growing interest in "green IT" among U.S. SMBs is discussed. "Both small and medium-sized businesses around the world are increasingly sensitive to environmental issues, but only up to a point," says Ray Boggs, vice president of SMB research for IDC. "SMBs appreciate that global interests are served by being ecologically sensitive, but when their own financial interests can be served as well, that's when behavior changes." IDC survey work found that SMBs are increasingly taking environmental factors into account when buying technology, but contrary to some expectations, medium-sized firms rather than small ones, and those in developing rather than developed countries are most likely to cite environmental factors as influential in the technology selection process.
