Abstract

This IDC study, which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J11010104, analyzes the Japan Layer 4–7 switch market trends and the future outlook. In 2010, the Japan Layer 4–7 switch market experienced an increased demand due to enhancement of equipment, following the expansion of services delivered over the Internet. The market finally returned to the recovery track after experiencing negative growth since 2008. The market is expected to grow from 2011 onward, due to increased demand for Internet services equipment and consolidation of enterprise systems to datacenters. The impact of the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake is considered in the forecast of this study.

To expand the Layer 4–7 switch market, it is important for Layer 4–7 switches to take on the role of a platform that consolidates functions/applications necessary for networks in a virtual server/datacenter environment. "To emerge victorious in the platform competition, it is paramount for vendors to construct a platform that can improve the performance of Layer 4–7 switches and other functions, based on improvements in CPU performance. IDC believes that such moves will help Layer 4–7 switch vendors survive the platform competition and continue to exert their existence in the virtual server/datacenter environment," says Kenichi Kusano, senior market analyst, Communications, IDC Japan.
