Abstract

This IDC study examines the U.S. prepaid wireless market and focuses specifically on the adoption of prepaid services by consumers. The analysis in this study includes the following:

  • A discussion of recent trends in the U.S. prepaid services market
  • Forecasts of prepaid subscribers, revenue, and ARPU for 2011–2015
  • An examination of market characteristics and guidance for mobile operators to leverage the growth opportunities in the coming five-year period

"The division between postpaid and prepaid services has become increasingly blurry over the past few years," says Suzanne Hopkins, research analyst, Mobile Consumer Services. "The traditional prepaid customer was interested in a low-cost service, mostly for the function of voice calling. However, as unlimited pricing models emerged, smartphones started to infiltrate the segment, and loyalty services were offered, the traditional prepaid model collapsed. As a result, some prepaid customers have started to demand and expect a service similar to that offered to their postpaid counterpart."
