Abstract

This IDC study provides a forecast and analysis of the U.S. mobile operator premium mobile entertainment market, which is typically provided over legacy content decks. Mobile entertainment products covered include ringtones, ringback tones, full-track song downloads, mobile games, and mobile television and video content and services delivered to mobile handsets. Forecasts include revenue (billed directly by mobile network operators [MNOs] and/or mobile virtual network operators [MVNOs]), subscribers/customers, and monthly average revenue per user (ARPU). The study also presents a qualitative discussion of trends specific to those markets.

This study has two central sections. The Situation Overview section reviews current market trends and discusses recent developments in the market, and the Future Outlook section outlines IDC' s assumptions about market trends during the forecast period and presents forecast data and analysis for the period from 2010 to 2015.

"The proliferation of app stores and off-deck services for mobile entertainment content expands user choice and challenges the relevance of operator storefronts. Mobile operators aren' t out of the game but need to step it up by taking on a new role as content and experience curators to make search across operator and off-deck app and entertainment sources simple and easy, offering their own storefront content as front-and-center apps and leveraging network user information to offer tailored recommendations to their users." — Susan Kevorkian, research director, Mobile Connected Devices
