This IDC study sizes the online gaming subscription market in
Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ. It includes 2008 historical data
and 20092014 forecasts by number of subscribers and subscription revenue.
Historical and forecast revenue data is shown for the markets
of India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, Singapore, Taiwan,
Thailand, and Vietnam.
APEJ' s online gaming market continues to grow in
2009, with an increase of 26.4% in 2009. Higher Internet
and broadband penetration rates, as well as more free-to-play game
offerings continue to expand the pool of gamers in the
region. "In 2009, the rise and popularity of social games
introduced online gaming to many new gamers. This increase in
online gamers can potentially lead to an increase in serious
online gamers, as casual and social gamers start advancing to
explore more serious games," says Audrey Heng, market analyst, Emerging
Technology Advisory Services, IDC/Asia/Pacific. "The rise of social games also
further highlighted the importance of building gaming communities. SPs should
focus on building up their gaming community to minimize gamer
migration in this competitive environment," she adds.
