This IDC study updates the previously published Asia/Pacific Branded Tape Drive Market, 2009–2013 (IDC #AP268101S, September 2009). This study relates to the single tape drive market and provides the following market data:

• A summary of the market in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ in 2008 compared with 2007
• Revenue and unit shipments broken down by country, class segment/technology, and vendor
• Forecasts of the market from 2009 to 2013 for the region, as well as separate forecasts for each of the 13 countries covered

"As the APEJ region feels the full momentum of the economic crisis, the constantly shrinking single tape drive market continues to be marginalized by a few major factors. The usage of tape as a backup system is fast becoming an archive tool with the faster and cheaper disk-based storage solutions. The APEJ tape market is expected to rebound marginally in 2010, as delayed purchases from 2009 begins to be booked in. Midrange tape formats such as LTO will slowly replace smaller capacity formats such as SLRs, AITs and DATs as the new LTO 5 makes its presence in the end of 2009. In the first half of 2009, the single tape drive market fell by 43.7% with a total of US$71.7 million in revenue. Units, on the other hand, declined at half the pace, with shipment decline of 22.4% totaling at 41,587 units in the first half of 2009," says Mark Lee, market analyst, Storage Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.
