Abstract

This IDC study provides a general overview of the solar power generation industry, including the PV and solar thermal (CSP) varieties. Solar power generation has experienced accelerated growth in recent years. In the form of both photovoltaics and solar thermal methods, the sector has been driven by the awareness to climate change, fossil fuels price volatility, and deriving government mandates for the increased use of renewable energy sources while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to REN21, in 2008, solar power generation accounted for 13.5 gigawatts (GW) in global electrical capacity, accounting for approximately 5% of the total renewable electrical capacity (excluding large-scale hydropower).

A free, widespread, and unlimited energy source, total solar radiation to the earth' s surface is enough to provide over 10,000 times the global electrical capacity. Solar power benefits include ubiquitous availability, correlation with peak hours, modularity, flexibility, simple installation and maintenance, high reliability, recyclability, and diversified applications.

"With technological advances and consistent cost decreases, the sector faces a sunny future ahead as an autonomous power generation source. Additionally, the sector is forecast to experience growth as a complementary source, part of fuel source diversification programs — both in the addition to fossil fuel power plants and in the installation in rural areas as a viable alternative to diesel engine generators. Governmental support schemes have also driven the sector forward, compensating for the cost parity gaps and providing working capital for increased R&D in a variety of emerging solar harvesting techniques," according to Danny Lev, research analyst at IDC' s EMEA Emerging Technology.
