Abstract
This IDC study assesses the market opportunity for worldwide software
revenue driven by SOA in 2008 and presents a forecast
for 2009–2013. Historical data beginning in 2006 and forecast revenue
data is shown for the total worldwide SOA market along
with segmentation by primary market, secondary market, geographic region, and
operating environment. Forecast assumptions are explained and defined quantitatively along
with upside and downside forecasts for the overall SOA market
This study does not contain vendor-specific revenue, market shares, or
vendor profiles.
"The impact of services-based computing is having a ripple
effect across the entire IT industry, enabling the Web to
become a fundamental computing platform," according to Stephen D. Hendrick,
group vice president for Application Development and Deployment research. "Given
the current economic climate, vendors are learning that much more
crispness and clarity around what SOA, and its many forms,
can represent to business. Lighter-weight and alternative solutions will continue
to gain in popularity, forcing incumbent infrastructure providers to advance
in usability; further reduce undue complexity, constraints, and proprietary dependencies;
and explore varied business and deployment models."
