Abstract
In 1949 the founders of modern China inherited a scant few chemical factories
which collectively could barely be considered an ‘industry' and
contributed less than 2% of GDP. In the subsequent 6 decades China' s chemical
industry has seen phenomenal growth and now ranks among the country' s most
important industrial sectors. In 2007 the chemical industry contributed over
21% of China' s GDP.
This aim of this 57 page report is to provide, in a relatively compact format,
an overview of the development of the Chinese chemical industry. We plot the
course of its growth through to the present and its importance for the
national economy.
We look at the main chemical products and sectors, and analyse in overview the
companies involved, including key features relating to the Top 500 Chinese
chemical companies. We examine imports and exports, and foreign trade issues
relating to the chemical industry.
We end the report by highlighting the areas of national focus identified for
future development within the industry.
