As communications service providers continue to seek alternative revenue streams, one customer segment they are trying to better serve is the business segment - that is, their enterprise and small-to-midsize business (SMB) customers. Forward-thinking operators are marrying the capabilities of cloud and mobility to offer more enhanced service to this segment. As customers today want services 24/7 from anywhere, on any device, service providers are becoming increasingly aware that cloud mobility is the next logical business model. Heavy Reading recently conducted a survey of 61 unique service providers worldwide that examines respondents' attitudes, perceptions and plans in regards to using cloud innovation to better serve their enterprise and SMB customers. Respondents from North America, Asia/Pacific, Europe, Latin America and Middle East/Africa express a universal desire to look to cloud innovation to enhance mobility capabilities and better serve their business customers.

As service providers are always fighting with over-the-top (OTT) players over market share, survey results shared in the report indicate that network ownership and the ability to offer end-to-end service-level agreements (SLAs) between customer premises and data centers are important factors to service providers that are looking to differentiate their enterprise services from the competition, such as Amazon. But, in ramping up for cloud mobility to beat their competition, are service providers' IT systems ready? Respondents across all regions reported that their IT resources still need improvement in areas such as product management catalogue and customer billing and charging for current or planned cloud services. Respondents indicate they will make significant investments in business support systems (BSS) to support their cloud services, but service providers will have to choose a solution that can help them support all of the aforementioned, while also integrating with their current BSS/operations support systems (OSS) in order to provide successful cloud mobility to their enterprise and SMB customers.

It is clear that operators are looking to the cloud as a new business channel and hope to fill any gaps left by the established cloud providers, such as Amazon and Google. The established providers, having had issues with disruption of service, leave some skeptical and looking to a cloud provider that may have closer ties to the network and a better grasp on security, scalability, quality of service, service management and performance monitoring.

In terms of cloud and mobility, enterprises and SMBs want capabilities such as Web, IT support and business productivity, as well as videoconferencing, field workforce automation, integrated business process automation and document workflow automation. Enterprises and SMBs feel that reduced TCO and increased employee activity are the top benefits of cloud-enabled mobility initiatives. Clearly the demand is there from the business customers to enable cloud mobility; service providers will have to choose a solution partner that can help them transform and then support their BSS/OSS in order for the transition to a cloud mobility model to be successful.

Service providers are becoming more interested in cloud services and applications because they reduce costs and time to market for new products or services, while increasing agility and scalability.
