With some experts predicting the wireless test equipment market to reach $4.8 billion by 2018, it's of little surprise that one of the fastest growing verticals is found in testing and monitoring of backhaul.
Backhaul has been an important facet of mobile network architects since Ethernet was introduced, specifically because of the timing in the inherently asynchronous protocol. Without the testing that ensures timing, user experience degrades and calls are dropped because they're not switched properly from one tower to the next.
With the advent of small cells, the need for testing increases incrementally. While the past problems primarily focused on synchronization between neighboring macrocells, the implementation of small cells now requires operators to deal with handoffs between small cells that operate underneath macrocells in virtually the same locations.
