Abstract
This IDC Health Insights Perspective highlights early indicators of the
emerging role of genomics that can be expected to significantly
impact the entire health industry value chain over the next
several years. With the aspiration of the $1,000 genome rapidly
becoming reality, research and service organizations involved in genomics need
to expand their focus beyond the academic roots of whole
genome sequencing (WGS) to more commercial, process-oriented efforts designed to
deliver high-quality genomics results and insights on a routine basis.
BGI, the world' s largest genomic organization, is taking the lead
in moving beyond delivering one-off genomic sequences to beginning to
deliver more comprehensive results and insights on the path toward
more routine and reproducible delivery of genomic knowledge on demand.
From
a business perspective, this important shift should enable BGI to
maintain its market leadership, particularly as the life science industry
is increasingly looking to further outsource its R&D efforts to
best-of-breed partners. The anticipated rapid growth of knowledge, combined with
the ability of the emerging field of translational medicine to
rapidly translate discoveries into improved patient outcomes, ensures that genomics,
and particularly WGS, will be a strong industry growth segment
for years to come.
