Abstract

This IDC Health Insights report provides a follow-up to our 2007 and 2008 assessments of the annual spending in the life science market for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software and services to electronically capture and manage clinical trial data using electronic data capture (EDC) solutions. Accelerated adoption and growing commoditization have directly impacted commercial EDC markets, resulting in slowing of EDC spending growth. With significant adoption in place, markets are reaching full penetration and future top-line EDC revenue growth will be limited. We believe that the EDC market has matured and pricing pressures will balance anticipated growth in Phase I and Phase IV/non-IND studies.

"EDC has delivered on its promise to eliminate paper processes in clinical trial data collection," says Alan S. Louie, research director at IDC Health Insights, an IDC company. "With the availability of a variety of commercial EDC solutions and offerings tailored to meet a variety of sponsor needs, EDC has matured to become a ubiquitous tool in the broader eClinical suite. It' s now time to focus on better–connecting, available eClinical components to drive improved information sharing, analytics, and reporting with the hope of accelerating clinical trials while simultaneously improving patient safety."
