Abstract
This IDC Health Insights report summarizes major data contained in
the attached pivot table to help readers understand the overall
structure of the healthcare industry and the view of IDC
Health Insights on IT. On the quantitative side, focus is
on spending in hardware, packaged software, and IT services for
the major European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the
U.K.) in the 2008–2013 time frame; IT spending is provided
for two subindustries: private healthcare providers versus public healthcare providers.
This study also provides a breakdown, only for Western Europe,
of IT spending among hospitals (NACE classification code 85.11) and
other primary and community care providers (NACE classification code 85.12,
85.13, 85.14, and 85.3). On the qualitative side, the report
analyzes IT adoption trends and describes major drivers and inhibitors
of IT adoption in the healthcare sector.
"Despite the current economic
crisis, IT spending in the Western European healthcare sector continues
to remain strong, with a projected growth rate of 4.3%
in the provider segment from 2009 to 2010," said Silvia
Piai, senior research analyst, IDC Health Insights. "IT vendors wishing
to penetrate the healthcare market will need to balance strategic
and tactical approaches. Healthcare providers will continue to take a
strategic approach to IT investments and will need to partner
with IT vendors that are able to support long-term strategies.
At the same time, as healthcare vendors demand immediate tangible
results from IT projects, IT vendors have to build their
offerings around modular implementations, each of which is able to
provide positive ROI analysis."
