OUTLINE:

This survey is focussed on consumer attitudes towards usage restrictions that are imposed by DRM. Survey respondents comprised 405 online users in the United Kingdom spanning the age band 15 to 65 years, each of whom said they had a collection of digital music.

SCREENING QUESTION:

This survey contains responses from online consumers who answered ' Yes' to the following screening question:

"Do you have your own collection of digital music?"

SURVEY INTRODUCTION PAGE:

The following information was presented to qualifying panellists in order to explain the nature of the survey and its focus:

"This survey is about usage restrictions that are applied to digital songs purchased from online music stores like iTunes. These restrictions are enforced by software technology called digital rights management (DRM) which is applied to each digital song file."

  • Question 1: What do you think about these usage restrictions?
  • Question 2: If you buy digital music, then what sort of problems have you personally experienced with these usage restrictions?
  • Question 3: If you buy digital music, what sort of usage restriction have you personally found to be the most annoying?
  • Question 4: Do you buy digital music?
  • Question 5: If all digital music was sold without any usage restrictions, what would happen to the amount you spend on digital music, compared with the amount you spend on CDs?
  • Question 6: If online music was supplied without any restrictions, would you be inclined to share your music more than you currently do?
  • Question 7: If you don' t already buy digital music, then why not?
  • Question 8: What is the most important change that would be needed for you to only buy digital music?
  • Question 9: How much would you say you spend on albums (CDs, digital and vinyl)?
  • Question 10: Roughly speaking, what proportion of this do you spend on digital albums?
  • Question 11: Roughly speaking, what proportion of your CDs have you lent to friends for them to copy?
  • Question 12: Approximately how many CD albums have you bought over the years?
