Following three successive hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and Southeastern United States in 2017, stories emerged of microgrids enabling buildings to keep their power on. Many of these were basic microgrids. Basic microgrids - differentiated from advanced microgrid systems because they have only one distributed energy resource (DER) technology, usually a gas or diesel generator - make up the majority of the microgrid market in Florida and Texas.

This year, GTM Research expanded its data collection effort and microgrid definition to capture a wider group of resilient distributed energy systems. GTM Research now tracks over 1,900 basic and advanced, operational and planned microgrids. (The data is part of the GTM Research Grid Edge Data Hub, available to premium Grid Edge subscribers).

* The size of the bubbles correspond with the total capacity(MW) installed in that location.

** Microgrids are mapped based on city lovation; when muliple microgrids are in the same city they may get the multiple end user designation.

In some cases for data privacy, data is given at a state or national level. In these cases, the microgrids are mapped at the center of the state.

Colleen Metelitsa is a Grid Edge Analyst with GTM Research specializing in microgrids. Prior to GTM, Colleen earned her MPA in Energy Finance and Policy from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. During her Master's program, she worked with the NY Green Bank, GE Ventures, and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) on topics ranging from applications of blockchain in energy to the commercial deployment of energy storage technologies.
