Global battery energy storage systems (BESS) market witnessed a market value of around US$3.30 Billion in 2016 and is estimated to reach over US$14 Billion by 2021, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 35% between 2016 and 2021. The top five countries in the global market include the US, Japan, South Korea, Germany, and China. They represented around 85% of the global total in terms of cumulative installed capacity in 2016.

United States and Japan led the market in 2016 with just over 30% and around 20% shares, respectively, in 2016. In the year 2016, the Asia-Pacific region led the market holding almost 42% of the global BESS market, followed by the Americas with around 33%, and Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with about 25%. With respect to technology, lithium-ion has been the preferred technology to date and shared approximately 75% of the global market with respect to BESS installations up to 2016.

In the Asia-Pacific region, Japan led the regional market with a share of over 50% with respect to market value for projects installed up to 2016. In 2016, Japan's newly built energy storage projects were largely used in transmission and distribution (T&D). The Japanese New Energy Promotion Council (NEPC) made available US$2.57m to develop two Large-Scale Grid-Balancing Battery Energy Demonstration Projects to help the Kyushu Electric Power Co. and Tohoku Electric Power Co. install energy storage systems (ESS) allowing more renewable energy in the grid (CENSA, 2017).

In the EMEA region, Germany led the regional market with a share of approximately 58% with respect to market value for projects installed up to 2016. Ancillary services and solar plus storage are the main opportunity segment in the country. Storage subsidies from the KfW Development Bank and the fall in feed-in tariff (FiT) rates will help boost the market for energy storage during and beyond the forecast period. The EU battery industry is shifting its focus toward decarbonization of the energy system. However, regulatory barriers should be removed to allow the energy storage market to grow.
