Abstract
Nuclear Power in Ukraine, Market Outlook to 2020, 2011 Update - Capacity, Generation, Regulations, Power Plants, Companies
Summary
Ukraine is highly dependent upon on nuclear energy for its power requirements. It currently possesses 15 operational nuclear power reactors contributing 46.03%of the country’s electricity generation. Russia provides most of Ukraine’s fuel and services pertaining to nuclear energy. The electricity demand in the country is expected to increase from 307 billion kWh by 2020 and 420 billion kWh by 2030. In the past, the Chernobyl unit 4 accident and other incidents have hampered the nuclear industry growth in the country, such as the new nuclear constructions were suspended during 1991 and 1993. The growing energy needs and the technical evolution assuring safety in operation of nuclear power plants are making the policy makers favor the development of nuclear power in the country.
