Abstract
Nuclear Power in Canada, Market Outlook to 2020, 2011 Update - Capacity, Generation, Regulations, Power Plants, Companies
Summary
Canada has a total installed capacity of 129,974 MW with nuclear capacity of 11,934 MW as of 2010. Canada has 18 operational nuclear reactors and around nine reactors are expected to come up in the near future. The nuclear contribution is about 14.7% to the total electricity generation in Canada. Ontario Power Generation Inc, Bruce Power Inc., Hydro-Quebec and New Brunswick Power are the key players in the Canadian nuclear energy industry. The commercial operating nuclear reactors in the country are of Pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) type. The electricity demand is met through hydro, thermal, nuclear and followed by other resources such as wind, biomass, biogas and solar PV. The net capacity of the existing nuclear power plants was around 11,934 MW in 2010. Canada has been very active in developing the reactor technology and had exported reactors systems to different countries globally. The nuclear policy of the country focuses mainly on utilization of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The nuclear energy utilization in the country for electricity production has aided the country to cut down the greenhouse gas emissions.
