India is a developing nation, having undergone various economic reforms over the past two decades that have enabled it to achieve a growth rate of 7.2% between 2000 and 2016. Market liberalization started in the early 1990s, when economic reforms designed to transform it from a socialist-structured economy into a free-market economy started to be implemented. Thereafter, the country has experienced rapid economic growth due to an increased investment and participation by international market players. However, 2011 witnessed a decline in the rate of economic growth due to prevailing high inflation and interest rates, coupled with slow progress in the implementation of economic reforms.

India's economic progress has mainly been driven by the performance of the manufacturing and services sectors, especially the latter. In line with this, electricity consumption increased at a CAGR of 7% during the 2000-2016 periods. On a year-on-year basis, consumption increased by 8.3% in 2010 but dropped to an average of 6.8% during the 2012-2016 periods. This can be attributed to the business sector's high share of electricity consumption.

India's burgeoning economy and increasing military strength have made it a regional leader in South Asia. Reforms initiated in the early 1990s allowed the country to develop into a trillion dollar economy, having grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2% from 2000 to 2016. However, economic progress has been erratic, largely due to suboptimal policymaking and lax program implementation.

Most of India's power generation is sourced from thermal power, largely coal. Coal-based capacity accounted for 58.5% of the total installed capacity in 2016, while its share of total thermal capacity was 88%, which will likely remain approximately the same through to 2030. The country's substantial dependence on coal-based capacity is a cause for concern. Despite large coal deposits and growing recoverable gas deposits as exploration activities continue, environmental concerns are growing over their continued use. These sources are increasingly being thought of as too damaging in the long term to be worth using.
