Abstract

Nuclear Power in the UK, Market Outlook to 2020, 2011 Update - Capacity, Generation, Regulations, Power Plants, Companies

Summary

The UK currently has a total installed capacity of 91,462 MW with nuclear installed capacity of 10,137 MW. Nuclear energy contributes around 16% of the country’s power generation. It has 19 nuclear power reactors generating 57 billion kWh of nuclear power. British Energy / Electricité de France and Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) are the key players in the UK’s nuclear industry, while initially the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) was the entity to commission nuclear plants and later it was handled by the Central Electricity Generation Board in England and Wales and the South of Scotland Electricity Board. The government to encourage the role of the private sector, proposed looking into the issues hindering the construction of new builds. Areva and Westinghouse have applied for Generic Design Assessment (GDA) for their 1,600 MW EPR and AP1000 reactor designs respectively. The new builds are expected to start commercial operations by 2020 with the completion of the licensing process. Around four to six new builds are currently in the planning phase and are expected to start operations by 2019 or after 2020 with the addition of 6,680-10,000 MW capacity. There are around 27 nuclear reactors, which are shut down or in the decommissioning phase.
