Definitions

Coagulants : Though different in chemical makeup, flocculants and polyacrylamide (PAM) products are also included in this segment. Coagulants are employed in the sedimentation and flocculation processes in the purification of drinking water, sewage treatment, as well as other industrial wastewater and process water treatments.

Scale and Corrosion Inhibitors : Scale and Corrosion inhibitors are used for a wide range of applications with particular emphasis in industrial open cooling water towers and boiler systems. This product segment refers to a formulation of WTC that have the multi-purpose application of both preventing the effects of metal corrosion and scale buildup.

Biocide : are toxic to microorganisms such as algae, bacteria, and fungi, and used to reduce and control the amount of microorganisms in a given system, including oxidizing agents and non-oxidizing agents.

Scale Dispersants : Are surface active negatively charged polymers that function by attaching themselves to minerals (inorganic salts), as they begin to precipitate out of solution. These particles then combine themselves to the inhibitor and remain in suspension. Their main function is in the prevention of dirt, plaque, and scale formation. This segment also includes scale inhibitors, and chelating agents products. Scale dispersants can be sold as concentrates or as part of a blend.

Corrosion Inhibitor : For prevention or slowing of metal corrosion which can incur maintenance costs, reduce efficiencies, or cause critical failures to the equipment, corrosion inhibitors are often found in industrial cooling systems, boilers, as well as in oil extraction.

Cleaning Agent : Mixed surfactant product, which can also contain corrosion inhibitors and chelating agents. These are used in the pre-treatment process, to clean old and newly installed equipment, as well as to clean filtering membranes in reverse osmosis filtration.

Pre-film Former : are used as a prophylactic measure for newly installed equipment to prevent corrosion, whereby they form a protective film on the surface of the equipment.

As of 2014 year-end, the total market for water treatment chemical in China was valued at approximately RMB 16.4 Bn. This represents an almost 2 fold increase in market size from 5 years ago. In 2014 total market growth was 8.3%. This represents a slight pullback from the double digit growth seen several years ago.

  • Foreign and Domestic Firms
    • Overall, foreign suppliers hold half of overall market share revenue, but are particularly dominant in the market for scale inhibitors and biocides. In the target market, foreign suppliers are growing slightly faster than their domestic counterparts.
