Research' s team of industry experts.
European Union (EU) 20 - 20 targets Accentuate the Need for Energy Efficient Lamps
The concern for rising environmental pollution and green house gases that
result in global warming has been at the forefront for driving the Europe
energy efficient lamps market. The European Union has set objectives to
achieve both 20% energy savings and emissions reduction by 2020. As of 2007,
EU has achieved a reduction of 9.3% from 1990 emission levels, yet a long way
to go. To this end, energy efficient lighting systems are one of the fastest
and cost effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases and develop an eco-friendly
energy system. These systems indirectly reduce carbon emissions by consuming
less energy and thereby decreasing fossil fuel consumption in electricity
generation. Presently, 14% of EU electricity consumption is accounted by
lighting with almost two-third of the lamps in use being inefficient. On
average, a typical energy efficient lamp is estimated to save 30kg of CO2
(carbon dioxide) per year compared to an incandescent equivalent. If all the
incandescent lamps used in domestic applications were to be replaced by Energy
Efficient Lamps (EELs), an estimated annual saving of 23 million tonnes of CO2
could be achieved in Europe. Comparative EU emissions (with 1990 index equal
to 100) from 1990 to 2020 are shown in figure below:

Government Initiatives and Media Agencies are playing a Vital Role in the Phase Out Of Incandescent Lamps
EU government and media agencies are working in tandem for the successful
implementation of incandescent lamps phase out. Their initiatives were of
great significance in promoting the market for energy efficient lamps that
includes CFLs, LEDs and halogens. Various campaigns, workshops, seminars,
forums have been arranged to aware the consumers and share the information
about the benefits of energy efficient products. Consumers concerns related to
mercury content, color quality, health concerns, side effects of CFLs are
being actively addressed by the government and other associations involved
with lamp industry. In order to promote the market for energy efficient CFLs,
government provides subsidies on CFLs and even distributed them for free. For
instance, around 100 million units of CFLs were distributed for free by the UK
government in the years 2008 and 2009. Media and other advertising agencies
promoted the benefits of ban and energy efficient products through various
means. Knowledge on various energy labels, registered mark and so on was also
shared with the public to prevent them from low quality products.
Halogen Lamps expected to be the First Choice of Movement towards Incandescent Lamps Replacement
The European halogen lamps market grew at a CAGR of 12.1% from 432 million
units in 2005 to 681 million units in 2009 and is anticipated to have a CAGR
of 20.2% during the forecast period 2009 - 2015. The ban on incandescent lamps
is one of the most important factors for driving the growth demand of halogen
lamps in Europe. The unavailability of most popular incandescent lamps in the
market will force the people to go for the other energy efficient alternatives
available in the market. Halogen saver lamps have similar looks, color quality
and matching CRI (Color Rendering Index) with the incandescent lamps and are
cheaper in price as compared to other energy efficient lamps available in the
market.
After the ban on incandescent lamps on September 1, 2009, halogen lamps
experienced an increase in their sales growth, yet a drastic influence was not
observed as people already had stocks for incandescent lamps. On September 1,
2010, the most popular 60 W incandescent lamps were banned in Europe. Industry
experts expect the ban to cause robust growth in the halogen lamps market in
2011. Industry experts in their interviews with GBI Research confirmed halogen
lamps to be the first choice of consumers among other available alternatives
such as LED and CFLs. CFLs with low mercury content and yellow light offering
are also high in prices as compared to equivalent wattage halogen lamp.
Similarly, LEDs offer high quality light but require high initial investment.
As of now, halogen lamps are the best available options to the consumers' in
Europe. However, in the long run, prices of LEDs are expected to reduce to
much greater extent which will then drive LEDs market.

Breaking Consumer Inertia is Imperative for the Accelerated Growth of CFLs
Despite a massive regulatory push and an extensive OEM media campaign, there
has been limited public enthusiasm for the energy efficient alternatives of
incandescent lamps. Consumer reluctance in embracing new technology is
inhibiting the growth of energy efficient lamps in general and CFLs in
particular. With regards to CFLs, consumers have been known to complain about
their aesthetics and light quality, specifically their colder temperature
compared to incandescent bulbs. Indeed another complaint about CFLs is that
they take longer to get to full brightness; a trait exploited by marketing
teams for LED lamp manufacturers, where no such delay in startup or flickering
occurs. Indeed a key driving factor behind halogen lamps having success in
Western Europe is simply to do with the desire in countries such as the UK to
have light as warm as incandescent lamps.
A large cross section of consumers invariably assumes that CFL is simply an
equivalent product to the incandescent lamps. Moreover, the marketing and
promotion of CFL is done, from a consumer' s perspective, simply as an energy
efficient light bulb, the energy saving alternatives of inefficient
incandescent bulbs. This is extremely misleading. CFL is an entirely new
product on account of the technology involved in it.
European CFL Lamps Market to have Stable Growth and is Expected to Reach 1.3 Billion Units by 2015
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) have achieved commercial success in an
industry dominated by incandescent lamps. In 2009, CFL volumes were about 698
million units compared to 406 million units in 2005 - a CAGR of 14.5%. The
increase in CFLs volume was due to rising consumer awareness of energy
efficient lamps with most CFLs being used in the residential area. Consumers
across Europe are interested in replacement of incandescent lamps by CFLs but
have concerns of health, side effects, mercury content and Color Rendering
Index (CRI) of CFLs. People confirmed that CFLs save 60-80% of the electricity
but offer white light, often dislike by them. They would prefer to go for
halogens lamps over CFLs for the replacement of incandescent lamps. Halogen
lamps are giving the next best competition to CFLs in terms of price and color
quality. The presence of cheap and low quality CFLs in the market further
hampers the trust of consumers. Many vendors in Europe are importing cheap
CFLs from China and are selling those under various local brands. Best
technology CFLs now have only 1 mg of mercury content but are expensive. GBI
Research in consensus with the industry experts expect the CFLs market volume
to experience a CAGR of 10.4% during 2010-2015 to reach 1,283 million units in
2015.

Illumination Applications to be the Cornerstone of Growth for European Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lamps Market
LED lamps are used in applications such as: mobile devices, signs and
displays, illumination and traffic signals. Mobile applications, including
laptops, digital cameras and mobile displays contributed 53.7% to the overall
European LED revenues in 2009. Signs/ displays stood second with a market
share of 16.1% followed by automotive and illumination applications. In 2009,
the illumination application contributed 6.7% to the total European LED
revenues in 2009 and expected to witness robust growth in the years ahead. GBI
Research estimates illumination to have a market share of 20.7% to the overall
European LED revenues by the year 2015. The Illumination LED lamps market is
expected to reach $1,755m in 2015 from $247m in 2009 at a CAGR of 48.1%. In
the illumination segment, LED lamps are used in residential and commercial
lighting, including; hotels, restaurants and showrooms. LED lamps save 80-90%
of the electricity compared to incandescent lamps and this huge saving in
energy cost and GHG emissions are driving market penetration. However, the
high initial investment involved with LEDs hinders their deployment path in
the present scenario. Manufacturers across the globe are involved in R&D and
cost reduction to rapid up the deployment of LEDs. As of now, LEDs price gap
is not supporting the market dominance, however in the next three to four
years LED lamps prices are expected to reduce drastically, ramping up their
commercialization.
