Abstract
Energy Efficient Displays Technologies to 2020 - Organic Light Emitting Diodes
(OLED) Displays Set to Propel Growth of the Industry
Global Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) Display Market holds Enormous
Revenue Potential and is expected to reach $10.6 billion by 2020
OLED displays have emerged as one of the most promising display technologies
in recent years. The estimated market for OLED displays grew at a Compound
Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 33.9% during the period 2005-2009. The global
OLED market was valued at $822m in 2009 in comparison to $256m in 2005 and is
further expected to grow at a CAGR of 25.5% during 2010-2020 to reach $10.6
billion by 2020. The high growth in demand is expected to follow the take-off
of OLED displays in large display applications including television sets,
monitors, desktops and others. As of 2009, OLED displays were mainly used in
mobile phones, digital cameras, mp3 players and other small panel applications
The primary revenue driver for OLED displays is mobiles phones, which
contribute almost 65% of the overall OLED revenues. The applications that OLED
displays are targeting are also served by Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), which
make OLED a replacement technology. The manufacturers are concerned about
whether the new technological developments will produce additional growth or
will only displace the older technologies. Further, the improvement in the LCD
display technology along with a reduction in prices is hampering the
deployment of OLED displays. The display industry needs a combination of new
applications and technologies to accelerate revenue growth. GBI Research in
consensus with the industry experts anticipates a high revenue potential of
OLED displays in the years ahead.
Innovation in Technology and Mass Production Volume Expected to Cause a
Decline in OLED Display Prices
The innovation in technology and mass production volume are expected to cause
a decline in OLED display prices. GBI Research, in its interviews with
industry experts, find that the OLED displays are much easier and simpler to
produce than the dominant LCD displays. Industry experts expect a huge decline
in OLED prices once they are being produced in certain volumes. The path to
high volume manufacturing and larger sizes for Active Matrix Organic Light
Emitting Diodes (AMOLED) has been slower and harder than anticipated by the
industry experts. The OLED display manufacturers are finding it difficult to
reduce prices, which in turn are holding back the commercialization of large
panel displays. The OLED display manufactures across the globe are involved in
Research and Development (R&D) and expansion of their production line, which
will help them in attaining economies of scale and thus reduce the prices.
OLED displays generate their own light meaning that they do not require any
backlighting and thus consume less power. The low power consumption by OLED
displays makes them best suited for applications such as laptops and mobile
handsets. OLED displays promise faster response times, wide viewing angles,
exceptional color reproduction, outstanding contrast levels, and high
brightness. Further, the thin and lightweight designs of the OLED displays
make them attractive to use in a variety of applications such as mobiles,
laptops, digital cameras and mp3 players, among others.
Asia-Pacific region will remain the Manufacturing Hub for Global Energy
Efficient Displays
The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region was a major production hub for energy efficient
displays in 2009, contributing a substantial 90% of the energy efficient
display production. In APAC, Japan, Taiwan, China and the Republic of Korea
are the major manufacturers of energy efficient displays. The countries in
APAC are preferred destinations for electronics manufacturing due to the
availability of cheap labor, abundant raw materials and the robust
infrastructure. GBI Research predicts the APAC countries to remain the
manufacturing hub in the years ahead. The displays found their major
applications in the consumer electronics segment and so the APAC countries are
providing facilities and a much needed boost to the energy efficient display
industry. However, these countries are subjected to major scrutiny while
outsourcing manufacturing for sectors such as medical, defense and automotive,
where the reliability and safety of the end product are major concerns. The US
and European countries are mainly involved in R&D, patents and processing
knowledge, and outsource their production to the APAC countries. GBI Research
has found that the US and EU countries have medium to low production lines but
possess a strong position in process knowledge and Intellectual Property
Rights (IPR) related matters. Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) stood
second, contributing a total of 6% of the global energy efficient display
production followed by America with a contribution of 4% of the overall
production. The production shares of the major regions in the overall energy
efficient displays market for the year 2009 are shown below:

TFT-LCD Displays to
Continue to Dominate the Energy Efficient Displays Market during the period
2010-2020
TFT-LCD displays or AMLCD displays are the current dominant technology and
were the earliest type of flat-screen solid-state display. The TFT-LCD market
experienced a CAGR of 10.5% during 2005-2009. In the past decade, the demand
for TFT-LCD panels has grown faster than the supply resulting in high revenue
growth. However, the improved production capacity, economies of scale and an
increased number of manufacturers have resulted in high supply and low costs
of production. GBI Research estimates the TFT-LCD displays market to grow at a
CAGR of 4.5% during the forecast period 2010-2020 to reach $103.2 billion by
2020. The overall market in 2009 declined despite the fact that shipments of
monitor panels grew by 20% from 2008 levels. Technological improvement and
price reduction are a part of broader strategy adopted by TFT-LCD
manufacturers to stay afloat in a dynamic market, which is replete with newer
technologies. The LCD display products are available at a much cheaper price
as compared to the other display technologies.
Huge Amount of Investments by Manufacturers Signifies High Growth Potential of
Displays in the years ahead
The energy efficient display manufacturers are investing a significant amount
to enhance their production capacities and improve R&D. This ramp up of
production facilities by the key players indicates huge demand potential of
energy efficient displays in the years ahead. Samsung Electronics Co., a
global leader in semiconductor and display technologies announced its total
investment in manufacturing facilities and research & development for 2010 to
be 26 trillion won for the year 2010. Out these, 5 trillion won will be
invested in the display facilities to expand the capacity for LCD panel
production and about 8 trillion won will be invested in the R&D facilities for
microchips and displays. In May 2010, LG Display Co., Ltd. has commenced mass
production at its second 8th generation plant P8E (Extension) in Paju Display
Cluster with a primarily objective to manufacture 32”, 47” and
55-inch TV LCD panels. The company began its production with initial monthly
capacity of 30,000 input sheets and planned to steadily increase it to even
120,000 input sheets per month by the year’s end. The manufactures are
also investing in other countries to enhance their geographical influence and
market position. Recently, AU Optronics Corporation, the market leader of LCD
panel in Taiwan market plans to build up a more-advanced 7.5-generation LCD
factory in China. The company has filed permission request to Taiwan' s
Ministry of Economic Affairs for setting up their business unit in China. The
building up of the plant in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province will require a $3
billion investment and is expected to have an output capacity of 80,000 to
90,000 panels per month by the end of 2011.
E-books will be the Cornerstone for the Growth of E-Paper Displays during the
forecast period
GBI Research estimates the global e-paper displays market revenues to grow at
a CAGR of 27.1% during the period 2010-2020. The ease of reading in
sunlight and low power consumption are two of the important factors that are
driving the demand for e-paper. Earlier, e-paper displays were used in
flexible or ultra-thin clocks and watches, but the first major
commercialization of e-paper products is now coming in the form of electronic
book readers. E-book displays are currently accounting for around 50% of the
overall e-paper displays market. The color e-book display entered the market
recently, but a major portion of e-paper displays remains black and white.
Industry experts do not expect a high volume of color e-paper displays to be
sold before 2012 due to the high prices and technical challenges. Though the
companies involved in e-paper have well developed programs to bring color to
e-paper, the current state of the art color e-paper tends to be rather pallid
and unattractive. E-paper displays are used in e-books, e-textbooks,
e-newspapers, e-magazines, mobile phones, electronic shelf labels,
point-of-purchase and public signage displays, displays in smart and
credit cards, clothes and other wearable items, and other applications
