Abstract
The flooding in Thailand, which accounts for forty-eight percent of worldwide
HDD manufacturing capacity, has taken a heavy toll on the industry. Submerged
facilities and damaged equipment have affected the supply chain including disk
drive bases, flex actuator assemblies, motors, pivot cartridges, suspensions,
HGA connectors, etc.
Production of HDDs will be heavily impacted in the latter half of Q4/11 going
into 2012 and the effects of the HDD shortage will continue to linger
throughout next year. As a result, PC OEMs are looking to satisfy a part of
the shortfall with SSDs. This incremental SSD demand along with the
introduction of lower priced ultrabook PCs will drive the adoption of SSDs
next year.
This report evaluates the impact of Thai flooding on HDD shipments and the
adoption of SSDs in PCs.
