This IDC Financial Insights report elucidates the specific business opportunities and priorities for Hong Kong banking CXOs in attendance at our annual Hong Kong Banking Roundtable.
In light of weakened global demand and the risk of contagion from the resurgent sovereign crisis, 2012's series of sessions seeks to incorporate views from industry practitioners on the new market dynamics that they are focusing on - whether in cost management, rethinking business models and exploring new product opportunities, or via increasing scale - while simultaneously embracing the twin challenges from the global disruptions and technology-based innovation that confronts them.
Conversations at the Hong Kong Roundtable also provide insights on industry trends around customer-centric banking and the role of Big Data and analytics; and on the bankers' strategic focus specifically on distribution channels such as branches, ATMs and mobile, and on technology security and fraud mitigation.
"Cost control will be a crucial factor in stabilizing profitability in Hong Kong but requires effort as inflation drives up operating expenses even as net interest margins near historic lows. Meanwhile, muted loans growth - projected at 8% for Hong Kong in 2012 - have bankers intensifying efforts to secure larger fee-based operations from commercial and corporate banking, and ramping up on investment banking, equities trading, and advisory services," revealed Li-May Chew, CFA, associate research director, Asia/Pacific Financial Advisory Service.
