Abstract
This IDC Financial Insights Perspective presents insights from our research
as well as a number of events that have either
focused on or discussed social media in capital markets over
the past couple of months. Our conversations were with bank
social media executives, social media vendors, and thought leaders in
social media. They shared their thoughts and perspectives on social
media strategies and examples of use cases in financial services
and capital markets.
While Wall Street is slow in adopting social
media, there has been increased momentum and depth of dialogue
on the topic over the past several months. Initially, firms
viewed social media as personal tools and not as a
business solution. Given this, internal and customer usage of social
media was not seen as beneficial. This perspective has changed
drastically and, currently, it is almost a de facto rule
that you need to have or plan to offer some
social media program within your firm. The dialogue has moved
from should I be using social media to how to
best utilize it. IDC sees firms as needing to develop
their social businesses.
Not all industries have to contend with the
intense regulatory and data security/privacy environment that capital markets firms
constantly deal with. Because of this, there are unique considerations
for financial firms when thinking of social media strategies. In
this Perspective, we highlight some of these social media strategies
as well as examples from major financial firms that were
gleaned from specific conversations, events, and our ongoing research.
