US demand to reach $6.4 billion in 2020

US aseptic packaging demand is forecast to reach $6.4 billion in 2020, with growth outpacing that of the overall packaging industry. Advances will be fueled by drug sterility requirements and by ambient distribution and storage advantages for food and beverages. Specifically, the increasing availability of biotechnology-based injectable drugs necessitates aseptic filling and packaging, as such drugs tend to be heat sensitive, making the high heat used in terminal sterilization processes unfeasible. The shelf stability of aseptic packaging will fuel rapid growth in dairy-based food and beverages as it enables these perishable products to have a longer shelf life and be distributed in an unrefrigerated condition.

Biotech-based drugs to fuel pharmaceuticals market

Pharmaceuticals are the largest market for aseptic packaging and market growth will reflect the broadening availability and consumption of biotechnology-based drugs, along with aseptic filling requirements of other liquid pharmaceuticals. Biotechnology-based drugs tend to be heat sensitive and are thus unable to withstand the high heat of terminal sterilization processes. In addition, opportunities will be apurred by preferences among healthcare providers for unit-dose delivery formats, such as vials, ampuls, prefillable syringes, and premixed IV solutions, as these formats provide better efficiency and dosing accuracy. Gains in pharmaceutical uses will also be supported by increased use of advanced aseptic processes, such as blow-fill-seal (BFS). In contrast to traditional aseptic processing, BFS enables the molding, filling, and hermetic sealing of vials and bottles in a continuous automated process without human intervention, resulting in a high assurance of product sterility.

Prefillable syringes to be fastest growing products

Prefillable syringes will represent the fastest growing aseptic packaging product type through 2020, the result of advances in life sciences leading to a broader range of biotechnology-based injectable drugs. Increases will also reflect safety and convenience advantages of prefillable syringes and the prevalence of chronic conditions necessitating lifetime drug regimens. Prospects for aseptic cartons will be fueled by expanding liquid food and dairy beverage applications and innovations that enable aseptic filling of liquid and viscous foods with particulates. Other factors supporting growth include improving aesthetics of cartons, cost benefits, a favorable environmental profile, a premium image, the availability of cartons with closures, and the appeal of nontraditional packaging among younger consumers. Growth for aseptically filled plastic bottles will be the result of expanding food and beverage applications and ongoing opportunities in the pharmaceutical market. In the beverage market, increased adoption of aseptic filling of low-acid beverages is expected, as it enables shelf-stable distribution and storage of these products. Additionally, bottle opportunities will be helped by favorable consumption trends for preservative-free premium beverages, such as fruit and tea blends, and protein shakes, which can experience flavor changes and nutrient loss when exposed to the high heat of hot-fill bottling.
